Cleaning Cat Ears and Paws: A Gentle Cat Grooming Routine
What healthy cat ears and paw pads look like, a gentle home cleaning routine, and when to check with your vet instead.

Ears and paw pads are easy to forget during cat grooming. Your cat does lick its paws and scratch behind its ears, but neither job gets done completely. A quick, gentle routine lets you spot changes early and keeps your cat comfortable. Here is what normal looks like, how to clean ears and paws safely at home, and when to check with your vet instead.
What healthy cat ears look like
Knowing what is normal makes it much easier to notice when something changes. Take a look at your cat's ears once a week, in good light, while your cat is relaxed.
Normal signs
- Pale pink skin inside the ear flap
- A small amount of light brown wax, with little or no smell
- Fine hair at the entrance of the ear
- Your cat moves its ears freely and does not shake its head often
Signs that need a vet's opinion
Dark, crumbly debris that looks like coffee grounds, a strong smell, redness, swelling, discharge or frequent head shaking are not things to clean away and forget. Constant scratching at the ear or tilting the head also needs attention. Please check with your vet before any cleaning, because the cause needs to be identified properly.
A gentle ear cleaning routine at home
Most healthy cats need very little ear cleaning. The aim is to wipe away visible dirt from the outer ear, not to dig inside.
What you need
- Soft cotton pads or a clean, soft cloth
- A cat ear cleaner, if your vet recommends one
- A towel and a few treats
How to do it
Hold the ear flap gently and fold it back. Wipe the visible parts of the inner flap with a cotton pad, using light strokes outwards. Stop where you can no longer see.
Never push cotton buds into the ear canal. A cat's ear canal bends downwards, and pushing anything in can pack wax deeper or hurt the eardrum. Finish with a treat so your cat links ear checks with something pleasant.
How often
Look weekly; wipe only when there is visible dirt. For many cats, that means every two to four weeks. Cats with folded ears or lots of ear hair may need a look more often.

Keeping paw pads clean
Paw pads carry your cat across litter, floors and balconies all day. Litter can stick between the toes, and long-haired cats often have tufts of fur that trap dirt.
What healthy paws look like
- Pads that are smooth, slightly soft and evenly coloured
- No cuts, cracks or swelling
- Clean spaces between the toes
- Your cat walks and jumps normally
A simple paw routine
Once a week, gently spread each toe and look between the pads. Wipe away litter or dust with a damp cloth, then dry thoroughly. Moisture left between the toes in humid weather is not ideal.
For long-haired cats, the fur between the pads can grow past the pad itself. This makes floors slippery and collects litter. A careful trim of that fur is part of paw cleaning, and many owners prefer to leave it to a groomer.
Watch for these
Limping, licking one paw constantly, swelling, a cut or a nail growing into the pad all need your vet's opinion rather than a home clean.

When a grooming visit helps
Some cats are happy to have their ears and paws handled. Others wriggle away the moment you reach for them. If home cleaning has become a struggle, a short salon visit takes the pressure off.

Healthy ears are pale pink with a little light wax; healthy paws are smooth and clean between the toes. A weekly look and a gentle wipe when needed is usually enough. Never push anything into the ear canal, dry paws well in humid weather, and check with your vet if you see redness, dark debris, swelling or limping. For routine care, the Basic Grooming Package keeps ears, nails and paws in good order.
